How to Sync OurFamilyWizard With Your iPhone Calendar
=====================================================

Get your OurFamilyWizard custody schedule into Apple Calendar on iPhone, iPad and Mac, so parenting time and handoffs update on their own.

> **Quick Summary:** OurFamilyWizard can't send its calendar to your iPhone on its own. The OFW app shows the schedule, but it never appears in Apple Calendar next to the rest of your life. OFWSync reads your OFW calendar and publishes it as a read-only subscription feed that Apple Calendar checks for changes. Subscribe once on your iPhone, or on a Mac with iCloud as the location so it reaches all your Apple devices, then set Auto-refresh to Every hour. Parenting time shows as "With \[parent\]" blocks, mid-day exchanges as short handoff events, and OFW appointments keep their times, places and reminders. Changes still happen in OFW, which stays your record.

Most iPhone owners check one app before they plan anything: Calendar. If your custody schedule only lives inside OurFamilyWizard, it isn't there. You end up opening OFW to check whose weekend it is, then switching back to Calendar to see if the dentist clashes with a handoff.

This guide shows how to sync OurFamilyWizard with your iPhone calendar so the schedule sits in Apple Calendar on its own, on your iPhone, iPad and Mac. It takes about ten minutes, and you do it once.

Step 1: Why the OFW App Doesn't Put the Schedule in Apple Calendar
------------------------------------------------------------------

OurFamilyWizard keeps its calendar inside OFW. You can see it in the OFW app and on the website, and you can download a one-off file of events, but nothing keeps a copy in Apple Calendar up to date. A downloaded file is a snapshot. The first time a weekend gets traded, it's wrong, and you have to delete it and start over.

What Apple Calendar can do is **subscribe** to a calendar at a web address. A subscribed calendar is a separate calendar that Calendar re-reads from time to time, adding, moving and removing events to match. That is the piece OFW doesn't offer, and it's what OFWSync provides: it reads your OFW calendar and publishes it at a private link your iPhone subscribes to.

### Read-only, on purpose

A subscribed calendar is read-only on your iPhone. You can see every event, but you can't drag a handoff to another day and have OFW change. That's a feature, not a gap. OFW is the record your co-parent sees, and possibly a judge too. Trades still get proposed and approved in OFW, and the approved version comes through to your phone on the next sync.

Step 2: Connect OurFamilyWizard to OFWSync
------------------------------------------

Create an account at [OFWSync](/register). Then choose **Connect OurFamilyWizard** and sign in with the email and password you use for OFW. We check them with OFW straight away and store them encrypted. OFWSync only reads your calendar. It never sends messages, proposes trades or changes anything in your account. The [security page](/security) explains exactly how the sign-in is used.

The first sync starts right away. Your feed link appears on the dashboard once it finishes. We hide the link until then on purpose, so your calendar app doesn't save an empty calendar.

Every account starts with a 7-day free trial of the Plus plan, so you can see the schedule on your phone before you decide anything. Plans are on the [pricing page](/pricing).

Step 3: Subscribe on Your iPhone or iPad
----------------------------------------

This is the quickest route if your iPhone is the only Apple device you care about.

1. On your iPhone, open your OFWSync dashboard in Safari and sign in.
2. Under **Which calendar app do you use?**, choose **Apple**. (On an iPhone it's usually already picked.)
3. Tap **Add to Apple Calendar**.
4. Your iPhone asks whether to subscribe. Tap **Subscribe**, then **Done**.

Open Calendar and tap **Calendars** at the bottom. Your OFWSync calendar is listed under **Subscribed**, and parenting time fills in within a few seconds.

### If the button does nothing

Some browsers and content blockers stop the subscribe link from opening Calendar. You can add the feed by hand instead:

1. On the dashboard, copy **Your private feed link**.
2. Open **Settings → Apps → Calendar → Calendar Accounts → Add Account → Other**.
3. Tap **Add Subscribed Calendar**, paste the link and tap **Next**, then **Save**.

On older iOS versions, Calendar sits directly in Settings instead of under **Apps**. The rest of the path is the same.

### One device at a time

A calendar subscribed on an iPhone stays on that iPhone. It doesn't travel to your iPad or Mac through iCloud. If you only use your phone, that's fine. If you want the schedule on several Apple devices, the Mac route below adds it once for all of them.

Step 4: Or Subscribe on a Mac and Get It Everywhere
---------------------------------------------------

When you subscribe on a Mac and pick **iCloud** as the location, the calendar is saved to your Apple Account, and every iPhone, iPad and Mac signed in to that account shows it.

1. On your Mac, open the OFWSync dashboard, choose **Apple** and click **Add to Apple Calendar**. (Or copy the feed link, open Calendar and choose **File → New Calendar Subscription**, then paste it.)
2. Click **Subscribe**. Calendar shows a settings panel.
3. Set **Location** to **iCloud**.
4. Set **Auto-refresh** to **Every hour**.
5. Untick **Remove Alerts** if you want OFW reminders to come through.
6. Click **OK**.

The **Auto-refresh** setting matters more than it looks. It decides how often Apple checks your feed, and if it's set to every day or every week, a trade approved this morning may not show up until tomorrow. Every hour keeps it in step with our own checks of OFW.

### Apple vs Google for fast changes

This is where Apple Calendar beats Google. Google Calendar refreshes subscribed calendars on its own schedule, often several hours apart, and you can't change it. Apple lets you choose. If you trade weekends often, an iPhone with an hourly refresh, paired with the Plus plan's hourly OFW checks, gets changes to you faster than anything Google offers. If you also use Google, our [Google Calendar guide](/blog/how-to-sync-ourfamilywizard-with-google-calendar) covers that side.

Step 5: Make It Look Right in Apple Calendar
--------------------------------------------

What you see on your phone is controlled in two places: Apple Calendar for color and visibility, and OFWSync's **Feed settings** for what's in the feed.

### In Apple Calendar

Tap **Calendars**, then the info button next to the OFWSync calendar. You can rename it and pick a color. Choose one you don't use for work, so parenting time stands out in a busy week. Untick the calendar to hide it for a while without unsubscribing.

### In Feed settings

- **What to include.** Turn parenting time, handoffs and OFW events on or off. If you only want to know whose day it is, keep parenting time and drop the rest.
- **Show parenting time as.** Choose **All-day blocks** (whole days named for whoever has the children overnight), **Exact times** (blocks that start and end at the exchange time), or **One event per day** (like "Custody: Dana > 2 pm Chris" on an exchange day). On an iPhone's month view, one event per day is often the easiest to read.
- **Household names.** Rename each household the way you'd say it, like "Mom's" and "Dad's", instead of the names in OFW.
- **Reminders.** Keep the reminders set on OFW events, use the same reminder for every timed event, or turn them off. Unlike Google Calendar, Apple Calendar shows reminders from subscribed calendars, as long as **Remove Alerts** was unticked when you subscribed on a Mac.
- **How far ahead.** Sync 1, 3, 6 or 12 months. Six is a good default; twelve helps when you're planning summer and holidays.

Changes in Feed settings apply to the feed straight away. Your iPhone picks them up the next time it checks.

### A calendar for each child

On the Plus plan, you can give each child a calendar of their own, with only the OFW events they're on, plus parenting time and handoffs. Subscribe to each on your iPhone and give each child a color. It's also a tidy way to share one child's schedule with a teenager who has their own iPhone, without showing them everything else.

Troubleshooting: When the Schedule Doesn't Show Up
--------------------------------------------------

**The calendar is there but empty.** Check your OFWSync dashboard. If the first sync hasn't finished, the feed has nothing in it yet. Wait for it to finish; your iPhone fills the calendar in the next time it checks.

**A trade from this morning is missing.** Two checks have to happen: we have to see the change in OFW (daily on Lite, hourly on Plus, or right away with **Sync now** on Plus), then your iPhone has to fetch the feed again. The dashboard shows when we last checked OFW, so you can tell which side is waiting.

**It's on my Mac but not my iPhone.** The subscription was saved **On My Mac**, not to iCloud. Remove it and subscribe again with **Location** set to **iCloud**.

**Everything stopped updating.** Usually your OFW password changed. The dashboard shows a notice; enter the new password and the next sync carries on. If you reset your feed link, every calendar subscribed to the old link stops updating, so subscribe again with the new one.

**The times are off by an hour or more.** Open Feed settings and check that the timezone matches the one your OFW calendar uses.

Frequently Asked Questions
--------------------------

### Q1: Does OurFamilyWizard sync with iPhone Calendar?

Not on its own. OFW has no live calendar feed for Apple Calendar to subscribe to. OFWSync reads your OFW calendar and publishes one.

### Q2: Will the schedule show on my iPad and Mac too?

Yes, if you subscribe on a Mac and set the location to iCloud. A calendar subscribed on an iPhone stays on that iPhone.

### Q3: How quickly do changes reach my iPhone?

It depends on two checks: OFWSync checking OFW (daily on Lite, hourly on Plus) and your device checking the feed. On a Mac, set Auto-refresh to Every hour.

### Q4: Can I edit custody events on my iPhone?

No. Subscribed calendars are read-only. Make the change in OFW, and it comes through on the next sync.

### Q5: Can my co-parent's partner or the grandparents subscribe too?

Yes. Send them your feed link and they can subscribe in their own calendar app. Anyone with the link can see the schedule, so share it only with people you trust. Our guide to [sharing a custody calendar](/blog/how-to-share-a-custody-calendar-without-sharing-everything-else) covers how.

Conclusion
----------

Syncing OurFamilyWizard with your iPhone calendar comes down to one subscription. Connect OFW to OFWSync, tap **Add to Apple Calendar**, and the schedule appears in the Calendar app you already check. Subscribe on a Mac with iCloud as the location to get it on every Apple device, and set Auto-refresh to Every hour so trades show up the same day. OFW stays the record you and your co-parent work from; your iPhone just shows it where you look. For the short version of the steps, see the [Apple Calendar setup page](/ourfamilywizard-apple-calendar).
